Algebra in Grade 4? Yes!

4A is learning how to create and solve equations using letters in place of missing numbers.
For the past few days we have been writing equations to match word problems. For example,

Mr. Lotzkar has some basketballs. Mr. Noel gives him 15 more. Now Mr. Lotzkar has 32 basketballs. How many basketballs did Mr. Noel give Mr. Lotzkar?

b + 15 = 32
b = 17

Today the students challenged themselves by creating their very own word problems to match the given equation: 18 + d = 31

What a clever bunch!

Book Talk

As part of the Grade 4 Language Arts curriculum, students will be presenting on their favourite books. The idea is for students to try to convince the rest of the class why they should read their book.

The assignment has two parts:

1. The sheet which will be completed in class

2. The presentation which will be developed in class and at home

The presentation must include the following:

- engaging introduction
- the genre of the book
- developed explanation of why this book was chosen
- who would like the book
- connections to the book (text to self, text to world, text to text)
- props/costumes/slideshow/visual element

All of the details and rubric have been distributed and can be found in students' homework folders.

Presentation Days:

Dec 3: Arlo, Ethan, Davey, Naomi, Selah, Sasha
Dec 4: Henry, Tobias, Rachel, Calum, Maya, Daniel
Dec 5: Yoni, Micah, Abby, Harlow, Tessa, Cassidy
Dec 6: Oren, Winter, Nora, Aliya, Maytal

Caribou Math Contest

The next Caribou Math Contest will take place on Wednesday, November 14th. All students are encouraged to participate and all math enrichment students are required to participate. The next interactive question will be the DOTS game. This can be accessed on the Games/History page. It will not be accessible one day before the contest and not during the 2 contest days because the web site can be used to solve the contest question and because when some parts of the world still have Tuesday, other parts have already Wednesday, i.e. contest day.

The tests will also have an interactive calcrostic question but no history question.
